About this place
Marushun in Akabane-Kita is the kind of neighborhood izakaya where you can settle in over affordable food and drinks without fuss. A natural first order is the house-made motsu nikomi. This warm, comforting bowl of simmered offal hits the spot on cooler nights and pairs effortlessly with draft beer, highballs, or gently warmed sake.
The menu is stocked with casual small dishes that are easy to order in abundance. Starters like chilled tofu and potato salad lead into grilled favorites such as ika goro yaki (squid grilled with its liver), salt-grilled mackerel, and chicken tenderloin skewers with ume plum and shiso. Crispy fried fare is also well represented, from chicken karaage to seaweed-flecked chikuwa isobe-age and ham cutlets, making it easy to put together an appealing spread whether drinking alone or with friends.
When you want something more substantial or a final dish before heading out, there are bowls of Inaniwa udon and tanuki soba. The lineup also includes spicy cod roe cream udon, mini curry, and ochazuke with your choice of spicy cod roe with takana mustard greens or ume plum with whitebait. The izakaya is closed on Wednesdays and opens from 17:00 to 0:00 the following morning on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays through Sundays.
